• welcome to my blog!

i am david s. spence, chief photographer and founder of spence photographics, a frederick, maryland-based wedding photojournalism studio.

i use my many years of newspaper and magazine photojournalism experience to capture couples as they are, in their own environments. i strive to be "hands-off" in my approach to shooting. my direction to couples is minimal so i can capture their true personalities in the images. i look to find natural, organic light to capture the moments as they are. with each wedding comes new and exciting challenges, but also fun and unique personalities that drive my images. i love to see the interaction between two families coming together to form a new family and lasting friendships.

    cheers!

taylor and james at the naval academy

i love naval academy weddings! and my most recent one for amy raab photography was no exception! the chapel at the academy is one of the most breathtaking places for a marriage ceremony. the grandeur and history of it all is a lot to take in, but oh, so fun to photograph! the day started at the loews annapolis hotel, an amazing place to shoot, and ended there with the reception.

taylor and james are so incredibly awesome! such a cute duo! thank you for making the day so fun and easy!

our favorites of 2009!

i put together this little video of my favorite images from the past year and wanted to share the love! thanks everyone for making 2009 my best year yet! looking forward to things to come in 2010!

liz and chris at the tidewater

my last wedding of the year was a familiar one. it felt as though i was in a time warp. it felt this way because almost half the people attending were the same folks at one of my weddings from last year, katherine and darren. this time, it was katherine’s little sister liz who was getting married. the family came back to the beautiful tidewater inn for the occasion. and what an occasion it was!

i started my day with the family at the tidewater inn. if you are ever in easton, maryland, go and check it out. it’s a great old hotel!

here they are, katherine and darren! great to see one of my couples again. you guys look great!

once again the cake topper looked pretty similar to the couple!

liz looked gorgeous in her gown. simple flowers and a beautiful veil really made the look!

dad was great in helping out with the train after some pictures in the inn’s gardens.

the detailing on liz’s dress was incredible. so much so, she had to take a little breather before we all headed over to the church.

most guests took the 1/4 mile walk over to the church. the weather was perfect for a little late fall walk!

trinity cathedral is incredible! it sits just around the way from the tidewater and is a cool old grey stone masterpiece!

i loved all the cool details around the outside of the church!

grandpa made himself at home early.

the inside of the cathedral is even more amazing! look at all that beautiful woodwork!

the altar made a great spot for doing some family and wedding party shots!

our beautiful couple, having a little doorway smooch!

it was a team effort to get liz’s dress bustled in the low light of the church. good work gang!

i caught this little moment right before liz and chris were introduced at the tidewater.

and right after i took this, the cake topper decided to take a dive off the top! i swear i didn’t do it!

ah oh! what did you do, chris?

cake cutting love! gotta love these two!

liz’s mom, mary, was gettin’ down on the dance floor…

…and so was chris’ dad, jim! the dancing was great, thanks to dj chris startt!

this little guy was busy checkin’ out the ladies!

thanks for being an awesome and fun couple, liz and chris!

classic baltimore nuptials

I first met with Meghann and Brian way back in the spring and have been waiting for this wedding all year, my final one of 2009 for Amy Raab Photography. WOW! I had the time of my live and came out with loads of awesome images. From start to finish, the day – and the couple – was a blast.

Thank you for being fantastic, Meghann and Brian!

Marikle Chapel at the College of Notre Dame is unassuming from the outside, but once you go inside, it is amazing!

The light coming in the huge windows outside the chapel was amazing! Gorgeous!

Look at these cuties! Such faces!

The interior of Marikle Chapel is just unbelievable.

I love this image! It is so timeless and totally captures these two on their big day.

The flowers were by Karen Lock at Flower Markets. Interesting fact: Meghann and her three sisters all worked for Karen as teenagers!

The fall colors were popping out of control! Awesome!

After arriving at the Mansion House in Druid Hill Park, we hopped in a super-deluxe golf cart and rode around taking pics in the Maryland Zoo.

OMG! I am so happy the wedding party came all the way down the hill for this shot. Thanks guys, you made my day!

A little pink flamingo lovin’!

All the boys looked snazzy in their bow ties, and totally fit with the timeless feel of the day.

The toasts were awesome, everybody was rolling!

Meghann and her proud papa.

Brian and his mom getting down.

Party time!

Meghann and Brian were good sports and did one last take out front. Perfect!

katie and jim at antrim 1844

november, my last month of the year for weddings, started out with a bang. gorgeous weather. intimate outdoor ceremony. super cool folks. dance party usa on the dance floor. and a really awesome young couple. perfect for the first of the last.

i had never met katie or jim before their wedding day, but as par for the course, i was made to feel right at home. katie’s mom, sandra, was incredible in making sure i had everything i needed the whole day. thanks, sandy!

the day started with an exploration of the grounds of antrim 1844 in taneytown, maryland. what a place! i had done a food shoot at the inn a few years ago, while i was still working for the paper, and knew the place was cool, but i really had no idea! this place is awesome! lots and lots of gardens, a huge main house with loads of charm in every room, scenery out the wazoo and a killer reception hall!

the mansion at antrim 1844

a little light ironing of katie’s dress. why do bridal shops stuff dresses into those tiny bags? 9 times out of 10, the dress comes out wrinkled!

flowers by jim did an awesome job on the bouquets!

the dapper jim.

nice kicks, jim!

jim and his crew. digging the looks!

it was a team effort for the garter!

the girls made the long trek back to the mansion, good thing all the guests had already arrived!

the heart-shaped vase ended overflowing with sand! i guess that means their love is overflowing!

katie and jim were showered with rose petals as they exited. i love this shot! it totally captures the day! they were smiling like this all day long! no wonder!

the light for the family pics was outrageous! just absolutely lovely!

cake by charm city cakes. awesome! they got engaged at the hollywood bowl, so this was very appropriate, even showcasing their favorite movies!

jim and his best men having a good time on the dance floor.

eddie from davis deejays did an incredible job of keeping folks dancing. everybody seemed to love it!

these two provided some good laughs during the garter belt portion of the evening. love the looks on their faces!

thank you for an incredible day and evening, katie and jim! you guys are awesome!
